In India, South Asia Pure Water Initiative, Inc., (SAPWII) provides households, villages, primary schools and health clinics with bio-sand water filters – simple point-of-use “slow sand filters” designed specifically for developing countries – that are extremely effective at reducing waterborne pathogens, microorganisms and dissolved salts.
Not only is SAPWII helping to provide rural and urban Indians with access to clean water, we’re creating jobs. Our bio-sand water filters are made locally in Kolar (district headquarters), Karnataka, India (60 miles east of Bangalore) from inexpensive local materials (cement, sand, gravel, copper pipe). These life-giving filters are virtually maintenance-free and require no electricity, chemicals, costly replacement filters or moving parts, which is why a Bio-Sand Filter lasts 25-30 years.

Our five-year goal is to place 15,000 filters into service in South India by 2011 and provide ongoing water and sanitation education.
SAPWII provides clean drinking water to one family, one school, one clinic at a time. We can continue to reach more households and protect the lives of more children with your generous support. Together, we can make a difference through the gift of clean water.
